The Alocasia ‘Sumo’ is a large, striking tropical hybrid elephant ear plant. It features massive dark green leaves and dramatic reddish-black or purple stems.
Plant Overview
The Alocasia ‘Sumo’ can grow up to 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide outdoors, or smaller in containers. Mature leaves can reach 3 to 4 feet long.
The plant has upward-pointing dark green leaves with purplish-bronze undersides and prominent burgundy-purple veins.
The Alocasia ‘Sumo’ is a hybrid cross, typically attributed to combinations of Alocasia portora and Alocasia princeps ‘Purple Cloak’ (or Calidora).
Care Requirements
Light: The Alocasia ‘Sumo’ prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the giant leaves.
Water: Keep the soil evenly moist, allowing the top inch or two to dry out between waterings. Do not let the plant sit in soggy soil.
Soil: Use a rich, well-draining potting mix with amendments like perlite or orchid bark for aeration.
Humidity: The Alocasia ‘Sumo’ thrives in higher humidity environments, with a humidity level above 50%.
Hardiness: The Alocasia ‘Sumo’ is hardy in USDA Zones 8–11. In cooler climates, bring the plant indoors or protect it before frost.
