Staghorn ferns (Platycerium) are striking, non-flowering epiphytic plants famous for their dramatic, antler-shaped fronds.
Two Types of Fronds:
-Shield (sterile) fronds: Flat, round leaves at the base that clasp the mounting surface and turn brown/papery with age; do not remove them, as they protect the roots.
-Antler (fertile) fronds: Forked, dramatic green leaves that branch out and hold the spores on their undersides. [1, 2]
Pet Safety: They are non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.
Care Requirements
Light: Provide bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sun will scorch and burn the delicate fronds.
Water: Allow the root area or mounting medium to dry completely between waterings. Soak thoroughly or water deeply, then let it drain completely. Reduce watering in the winter.
Humidity: They thrive in high-humidity environments like bright bathrooms or spaces with regular misting.
Temperature: Keep them in temperatures above 40°F (ideally 60–75°F); protect them from cold drafts and freezing weather.
Mounting: Because they need very little root space, they are famously mounted on pieces of wood or cork using sphagnum moss, though they can also grow in hanging baskets or loose, well-draining potting mixes.
